Graham

Graham is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of
Newcastle, and is also the Director of the Centre for Integrated
Dynamics And Control (which is a Commonwealth Special Research Centre).
He has been involved in a total of over 400 publications. More details

When not writing books on control, Graham amuses himself by trying to control a highly nonlinear multivariable nonminimum phase dynamical system (Picture, Picture, Picture). By the way, the other test pilot in the white helmet is Professor David Mayne from Imperial College.
The dynamical system was recently tested (Picture) on a 3000 km round trip to Broken Hill (a mining town 1000 kms west of Sydney in Western New South Wales). Broken Hill happens to be Graham's birthplace.
For those who are interested, it's a BMW 100/7 (Picture) dating from 1977 and recently brought into near new condition by expenditure of many hours and a "little" money.
A further leisure passtime for Graham is undertaking outdoor activities. So as not to be completely embarrassed by the younger ones on these trips, he tries to keep fit by walking to work (1 hour 15 minutes) each day. He particularly enjoys walking in the Australian bush. A recent trip was to Claustral canyon (grade 4) near Sydney. This involved three abseils down waterfalls into a river in a deep, narrow canyon. It is quite dark, so photographs do not capture the beauty of the location, but a rough idea is shown here.

Stefan

Stefan spent a period as Head of the department for Optimisation and Automation at the
Schwechat refinery of OMV in Austria (http://www.omv.com).
A major activity during this period was replacing the existing advanced control with
multi-variable controllers regulating entire units (some feature 40
and more I/O).
Stefan is currently the managing director of OMV's aviation division.
On vacation, Stefan most enjoys watching wildlife (picture) or exploring remote wilderness. Last year Stefan, Alice (with her wonderful ability to look equally natural in a jungle as on a balcony overlooking Vienna, picture) and 8 others mounted an expedition to a remote area in Amazonia, far Southern Venezuela.
The size of the landscape is best appreciated from a plane (picture), but it is the surface route (that is: river route) to a few destinations that is largely unexplored. After passing the last remote Yannomami villages (picture) in a bongo (a dug-out canoe with a simple sunroof, picture) we explored the river route to a remote mountain range. Weeks of fishing (picture), hammock camping (picture) and untouched nature (picture) made for an unforgettable experience.

Mario
Salgado was born in Chile. He studied Engineering in his home country
and ultimately moved into an academic career. He obtained a Masters
degree in Control at Imperial College London. Later he obtained a PhD
degree at the University of Newcastle, Australia. It was during the
latter course of study that he met the other two authors of this book.
His interests include signal processing and control engineering. He is
currently Head of Electronics at the University of Santa Maria in Chile.
Mario's University is located immediately next to the harbour of the ancient (and beautiful) port city of Valparaiso (picture). When not writing books (which alas has occupied a lot of time lately) he enjoys the joy of living in Chile including visits to a friend's cabin in Panguipulli - southern Chile (picture).
